Silk embroidery is made to be enjoyed in a home, not kept out of sight. A few gentle habits can help a table screen or framed display piece remain a calm part of your room for years to come.
Choose a stable place to display it
Place the piece where it is unlikely to be knocked, squeezed, or exposed to sudden temperature changes. A shelf, console, study, or protected tabletop can work well when the piece has enough space around it. Avoid leaning a table screen where it can slide or fall.
Keep it away from direct sunlight, moisture, and heat
Strong, prolonged sunlight can change the appearance of color over time. Bathrooms, damp windowsills, radiators, fireplaces, and areas with frequent steam are also poor choices for textile display. A dry, temperate indoor setting is the simplest starting point.
Handle the frame or base, not the embroidery surface
When moving a piece, use clean, dry hands and support it from its frame, stand, or outer edge. Try not to press on the embroidery itself. If you are arranging several objects on a shelf, leave enough room that the silk surface is not rubbed by ceramics, metal, or rough materials.
Use a light touch for routine dusting
For ordinary surface dust, begin with the least invasive option: a soft, dry brush or a clean microfiber cloth used gently around the frame and display base. Do not use water, household sprays, adhesive rollers, or harsh cleaning products on the embroidery.
Store it carefully when it is not on display
If you need to put a piece away, keep it in a clean, dry place away from direct light. Protect the surface from friction and avoid placing heavy objects on top. Retain the protective packaging when possible, especially if the piece may be moved or gifted again.
Ask before attempting repair or deep cleaning
For a stain, loose thread, or damage in transit, take clear photographs before trying to treat it. Contact the seller or a textile conservation professional for advice. A cautious first step is usually safer than a quick home remedy.
